Techniques that anchor AI outputs in verifiable facts by connecting models to external knowledge sources. Grounding reduces hallucination and is essential for enterprise use cases where accuracy is non-negotiable.
Why it matters
Models hallucinate because they generate text based on patterns, not facts. Grounding addresses this by providing the model with retrieved, verified information to base its responses on. For enterprise AI, grounding is not optional: a customer support bot that invents product features, a legal tool that cites non-existent cases, or a medical system that fabricates drug interactions creates real liability. The quality of your grounding system, how accurately it retrieves relevant information and how effectively the model uses it, determines whether your AI product is trustworthy or dangerous. This is why RAG, web search grounding, and knowledge base integration are core features of every serious AI deployment.
In practice
Google's Gemini uses built-in Google Search grounding for real-time factual accuracy. Perplexity AI built its entire product around search-grounded generation, citing sources for every claim. Enterprise RAG deployments typically combine vector search (for semantic retrieval) with keyword search (for exact matches) and metadata filters (for recency, authority, and relevance). Microsoft's Copilot grounds responses in organizational data through Microsoft Graph. The industry has converged on a standard pattern: retrieve relevant documents, include them in the prompt, and instruct the model to cite its sources and avoid claims not supported by the provided context.
