Human-in-the-loop (HITL)
- Definition
- A design pattern where a human reviews, approves, or corrects AI outputs before they take effect in the real world. HITL balances AI automation benefits with human judgment for high-stakes decisions.
- Why it matters
- HITL is the pragmatic answer to the trust problem. Fully autonomous AI is too risky for many enterprise workflows; fully manual processes are too slow and expensive. HITL gives you the speed and scale of AI with the judgment and accountability of humans. The art is in designing the right intervention points: where should a human review always, where should they review only exceptions, and where can AI act autonomously? Companies that get this balance right deploy AI faster because stakeholders trust the system. Companies that skip HITL face incidents that set back adoption across the organization.

- GitHub Copilot is HITL by design: the AI suggests code, the developer accepts or rejects each suggestion.
