Descript
Edit video and audio by editing text
- Overview
- Descript transcribes media and lets you cut video or audio by editing the transcript — delete a sentence and it disappears from the timeline. Its Underlord AI assistant handles filler-word removal, Studio Sound cleanup, clip generation, and multicam editing, all inside a document-style interface. A May 2026 API open beta lets teams pipe Descript into external tools and automate production workflows programmatically.
- Why it matters
- Descript sits at the intersection of transcript editing and AI post-production at a moment when lean content teams are expected to ship video at editorial cadence. It displaces both traditional NLEs (for non-editors) and standalone transcription tools by collapsing the full podcast-to-YouTube-to-social clip workflow into one interface. The May 2026 API open beta signals a shift toward programmatic content pipelines, which raises the tool's value for RevOps and marketing-ops teams — but also increases switching costs as workflows get embedded. Per-seat pricing at the Business tier ($50–$65/seat) can surprise growing teams.
- In practice
- Podcast teams use Descript to edit raw guest recordings by cleaning up the transcript, remove filler words, then push the same session to YouTube (full episode), LinkedIn (AI-generated clip), and a show-notes doc in one pass. The Zoom import integration means recordings made in existing standup or interview workflows land directly in Descript without re-uploading. The main limitation is the media-hour cap: Creator gives 30 hours/month, which is adequate for most individual creators but tight for agencies juggling multiple client shows.
- Best for
- Podcasters, YouTubers, and content marketing teams who need fast turnaround from raw recording to polished, multi-format output without a dedicated video editor
- Pricing
- Free (60 min/mo, watermarked); Hobbyist $24/mo or $16/mo annually; Creator $35/mo or $24/mo annually; Business $65/mo or $50/mo annually; Enterprise custom. All paid plans priced per seat.

Know the terms
Glossary entries that explain what Descript is built on.
Multi-modal
An AI model that can process and generate multiple data types, such as text, images, audio, and video in a single system. Multi-modal models like GPT-4o and Gemini are converging previously separate AI capabilities.
AI-native
A company or product built from the ground up around AI capabilities, rather than bolting AI onto legacy software. AI-native startups often have fundamentally different cost structures and GTM motions.
Co-pilot
An AI assistant that works alongside a human user within an existing workflow, providing suggestions, automating sub-tasks, and augmenting productivity while keeping the human in control of final decisions.
Agent
An AI system that can autonomously plan, use tools, and execute multi-step tasks on behalf of a user. Agents are the next major product paradigm after chatbots, with every major lab shipping agent frameworks.
